Good morning.
It's Thursday, October twenty-ninth.
Where are you right now?
Not in general.
Exactly.
On the edge of the bed?
Or at the kitchen counter, in your socks?
Notice the answer.
That's where we are.
Nowhere else.
Most mornings, we're already gone.
Halfway through the day in our heads.
Answering emails we haven't opened.
Having arguments that haven't happened.
This morning...
let's just be where your body is.
Your body is always in the present.
It can't be anywhere else.
It's a good place to start.
We have six minutes.
That's plenty of now.
Bring your attention to your nose.
Just the very tip.
Where the air goes in.
Breathe in normally...
and notice the air.
It's a little cool.
Now breathe out...
and notice it's warmer.
Cool on the way in...
Warm on the way out...
You don't have to change the breath.
Just feel it pass by.
In...
cool.
Out...
warm.
This is happening right now.
It only ever happens right now.
Now let your attention open up.
To sounds.
Don't go looking for them.
Let them come to you.
Birds outside.
Maybe a car door down the block.
Maybe something quieter.
The fridge.
Your own breathing.
Each sound arrives.
Then it's gone.
Let it go.
Now come into the body.
What can you feel?
The weight of your hands.
The fabric of your shirt.
A little itch on your cheek.
Maybe warm feet.
Or cold ones.
Don't fix anything.
Just notice it's there.
Then notice it change.
Now, the thoughts.
They're probably already here.
Watch them like cars going by.
You're sitting on the front steps.
Just watching traffic.
There goes a thought about work.
There goes one about dinner.
You don't have to chase them.
You don't have to flag them down.
Some are loud, like a truck.
Some slip by so quietly...
you almost miss them.
Just notice.
Oh, there's one.
And let it drive on.
If you get pulled into one...
and you will...
that's fine.
The moment you notice...
you're back.
That noticing is the whole thing.
It's what being present means.
Say this quietly to yourself.
I am here, right now.
This moment is enough.
Just rest here.
No sounds to find.
No thoughts to sort.
Just this.
Breathing, and sitting.
A bird calls.
Then quiet.
Cool air in.
Warm air out.
This moment will never happen again.
You're here for it.
Just this one.
Quiet, and a little ordinary.
Sitting right here with you.
Let the room come back.
Keep your attention close.
Feel your feet.
Press them into the floor.
Stretch your fingers.
Then let them rest.
One clear breath in...
And out.
Here's your practice for today.
Next time you wash your hands...
be completely there.
Feel how warm the water is.
The soap sliding between your fingers.
Don't plan the next thing yet.
Just wash your hands.
That's all.
It might be your calmest moment today.
Right there at the bathroom sink.
Twenty seconds of right now.
Open your eyes when you're ready.
Go easy into your Thursday.
