Good morning.
It's Saturday, November twenty-first.
Here's an idea for today.
What if everything moved at half speed?
Your walk to the kitchen.
Even the way you pour your coffee.
Let's try it now.
Settle in slowly.
Slower than feels normal.
Lower yourself into the chair.
Or sink back into the couch.
Take your time doing it.
There's a fire going somewhere nearby.
Hear it pop and settle.
We have six minutes.
And we're not going to hurry through them.
Let's take the slowest breath of your week.
breathing in...
so slowly you can barely feel the air.
Keep going.
Let it fill you bit by bit.
Now let it out...
like honey off a spoon.
Take your time.
There's no bottom you need to reach.
Again.
In...
slow as you like.
And out...
even slower.
Notice that how good feels.
Just breathing, with nowhere to be.
On a weekday...
when do you ever get to do that?
Now let's notice what's around you.
Slowly.
Like you have all day.
Because you do.
Start with the light.
Maybe it's on the wall.
A pale gold square from the window.
Watch it for a while.
It moves.
So slowly you'd miss it on a weekday.
Now listen to the fire.
The small crackle.
The soft shift of a log.
Feel the warmth of it.
On your shins.
On the side of your face.
Now listen to the quiet underneath.
The house on a Saturday.
The fridge hums.
A car goes by, far off.
Then nothing.
Most days, all of this is background.
We rush right past it.
On our way to the next thing.
And the one after that.
But slow living is mostly this.
Noticing the stuff that was already here.
Maybe there's a smell.
Coffee, or a little wood smoke.
Breathe it in slowly.
Let it stay in your nose a Before moment.
you let it go.
Take one more slow look around.
Pick the thing you like best.
Just rest your attention on Like it.
a cat on a warm windowsill.
Somewhere along the way...
fast started to feel like good.
Fast emails.
Fast lunches eaten over the sink.
You're allowed to step out of that.
At least for today.
Nobody hands out prizes for the fastest Saturday.
And if they did...
you wouldn't want one.
Try these, as slowly as you like.
I have enough time for this.
Slow is a good speed, too.
Sit with the fire now.
Doing nothing fast.
Let the logs burn down slowly.
They're in no hurry either.
If a thought comes...
let it walk in slowly.
And wander back out.
Just the fire.
And the light on the wall.
Begin to move again.
At half speed.
Turn your hands over.
Then back.
Stretch one arm up, then
the other.
One slow breath in...
And out.
Now choose one thing to do slowly today.
Only one.
Maybe it's making lunch.
Chopping one onion like it's the only job.
Hear the knife on the board.
Smell it hit the warm pan.
No phone propped on the counter.
Just you and the cooking.
The rest of the day can do whatever.
That one thing stays slow.
You might find you like it.
You might even do it again tomorrow.
Open your eyes whenever you like.
There's no rush.
