Good morning.
It's Monday, November ninth.
A new week.
Probably a full one.
Maybe last week felt scattered.
Twelve tabs open.
Nothing quite finished.
This week can go differently.
It starts with one thing at a time.
Sit up straight.
But let your shoulders stay loose.
Close your eyes.
Or let them rest on the floor.
One spot, a few feet ahead.
We'll spend six minutes...
training your attention.
Like a muscle.
Take one slow breath in.
And let it go.
Now let your breath be natural.
Don't change it.
Bring your attention to your nostrils.
Just the tip of your nose.
Notice the air coming in.
It's a little cooler.
Notice the air going out.
A little warmer.
That's your spot.
Stay with it.
At some point...
your mind will wander.
To an email.
To what's for lunch.
That's not a mistake.
That's what minds do.
When you notice it...
that noticing is the good part.
Just come back.
A cooler breath in.
A warmer breath out.
You drift.
You come back.
Each return is one rep.
Like lifting a weight once.
Stay with the breath at your nose.
Cool on the way in.
Warm on the way out.
Now picture a single candle.
On a wooden table.
In a dim room.
A thin white candle.
One small flame at the top.
Look right at the flame.
The bright tip.
The darker blue at the base.
Everything else in the room...
starts to go soft.
The walls blur.
The table blurs.
Like a photo...
where only one thing is in focus.
Sounds drift past.
Rain on the gutter.
A car outside.
You hear them.
You don't follow them.
The flame stays sharp.
Right in the middle.
If a thought walks into the room...
let it stay in the blurry part.
It can sit by the wall.
You don't have to talk to it.
Keep your eyes on the flame.
Here comes another thought.
Maybe the dentist appointment.
Or the thing your boss said Friday.
You see it.
You let it drift to the edge.
And you're back at the flame.
It never went anywhere.
This is what focus feels like.
Not straining.
Not gritting your teeth.
Just one clear thing.
Everything else, soft around it.
Two short lines for this week.
I can do one thing at a time.
When I drift, I come back.
Rest here now.
Clear and quiet.
Just the flame.
And the rain.
Calm focus isn't tense.
It's more like leaning in.
Like reading a good book...
and not hearing someone call your name.
You've felt this before.
Maybe drawing as a kid.
Or fixing something with your hands.
Stay with the one bright point.
Let the candle fade.
Let the room come back into focus.
Blink a few times.
Reach both arms up overhead.
One clear breath in...
And out.
So here's the plan for today.
Block out one hour.
Put your phone in another room.
Not face down on the desk.
Actually in another room.
Pick the one task that matters most.
And give it that whole hour.
When your mind drifts...
you know what to do now.
Notice.
Come back.
Open your eyes when you're ready.
Let's get to work.
