Okay.
Stop right where you are.
Whatever you were halfway through, the email, the wrapping, the list in your head...
it can wait six minutes.
It really can.
If you're at a desk, let your hands come off the keyboard.
If you're in the car, make sure it's parked.
If you're hiding in the bathroom for a minute, honestly, good call.
Put both feet flat on the floor.
Let your eyes close, or drop your gaze to one spot and leave it
there.
Notice the sounds around you for a second.
A heater humming.
Someone talking in another room.
Traffic, maybe.
Let them all be background for now.
Three slow breaths.
That's all we're doing first.
Breathe in through your nose...
all the way down to your belly.
And out through your mouth...
slow, like letting air out of a tyre.
Second breath.
In...
a little deeper than the first.
And out...
letting your shoulders come down from your ears.
Last one.
In...
filling right up.
And out...
all of it.
Every bit.
Now a quick check.
Where are you holding the rush?
Start with your face.
Busy days live in the jaw and the forehead.
If your teeth are clenched, let them part.
Let your brow go smooth.
Now your shoulders.
They've probably crept up without asking you.
Let them sink.
Let your head tip gently to one side, then the other.
Just a little.
Feel what's been tight in your neck all day.
Your hands.
Are they curled?
Open them.
Let them rest palms up on your legs if that's comfortable.
Your belly.
We tend to hold it tight when we're hurrying.
Let it go soft.
Nobody's looking.
Take one easy breath into that soft belly.
Let it rise, and let it fall.
Your mind will probably jump back to the list a few times while we
do this.
That's what busy minds do.
Each time, just come back to the next spot in your body.
And your feet.
Feel the floor pressing up.
Solid.
It's not going anywhere, and for a moment, neither are you.
Now, from this slightly calmer place, ask yourself What one thing.
actually matters next?
Not everything on the list.
Just the next thing.
The one that would make the biggest difference if it got done.
Let the answer come up on its own.
It's usually simpler than you expected.
Busy isn't the same as important.
A lot of the noise today was just noise.
Picture yourself doing just that one thing.
Not rushing it.
Just doing it, start to finish, and then looking up.
And notice if something on the list can wait until tomorrow.
Or be done a bit less perfectly.
Or be handed to someone else.
You don't have to decide it all now.
Just let the next step get clear.
Now just sit for a few breaths.
No list.
No clock.
You're taking a proper break, and you're allowed to.
If a thought about the to-do list pops up, let it go past like
a bus you don't need to catch.
Another one will come along.
You can let that one go too.
Alright.
Let's get you back in.
Take one more full breath in...
And let it out slowly.
Roll your shoulders back.
Stretch your fingers wide, then relax them.
Open your eyes.
Look at the room for a second before you look at a screen.
You've got your next step.
Go and do that one thing, at a normal human pace.
The rest will still be there, and you'll handle it better now.
And if the day speeds up again, you know where the pause button is.
Three breaths.
Feet on the floor.
