5 Minute Present Moment Meditation
A 5 minute present moment meditation for when the mind is in yesterday or tomorrow. You will come back to contact: breath, sound, the weight of you — this now, which is the only place life is actually happening.
Before you begin
You can keep the eyes softly open. Name three sounds. Return.

To begin this present-moment meditation, find a comfortable position.
The life you are looking for is not later. It is this sitting.
When your body feels ready, you may softly close your eyes.
Choose one sound in the room. Not the most interesting. The one that is actually here.
Stay with that sound until you can hear its edges — beginning, middle, fade.
Now choose one contact. Feet, seat, or hands. One meeting of body and world.
Sound. Contact. That is enough to locate you in the only time that is happening.
This is the life. Not the improved version. This breath. This chair. This ordinary now.
If the mind leaves for a plan, notice the leaving, and return to the sound.
Then return to the contact. Two anchors. You do not need a third.
What is it like to stop waiting for a better moment than the one you are in?
And let this moment be the one that counts.
Continue with sound and contact, and the breath if you wish.
Hear the sound again. Feel the contact again. Alternate, slowly, like walking two steps.
Presence is not a special state. It is not living only in commentary.
The commentary can continue. You do not have to move in with it.
If boredom appears, that too is present. Include it. Do not upgrade the experience.
Return. One sound. One contact. Your life, in miniature, right here.
You are not missing the real thing. This sitting is it, unadvertised.
There is no entrance exam for now. You are already in it.
Rest as someone who has stopped postponing their own life.
Keep one sound and one contact as you come back.
Now let your attention travel back. Hear the room. Feel the body. Still the life.
Open your eyes slowly, and take this present moment with you.
