To begin this meditation for calm, let yourself arrive in a comfortable position.
You do not have to feel calm yet. Sit down with what is here.
When your body feels ready, you may softly close your eyes.
Notice the speed you brought with you. In the breath. In the shoulders. In the thoughts.
We are going to downshift. Not by force. By giving the exhale more time than the inhale.
Breathe in through the nose. Then let the out-breath be longer, as if you were dimming a room.
What happens in the body when the exhale is allowed to finish?
The jaw can unhook. The belly can drop a little. Calm can be physical before it is mental.
You are allowed to be calm even if the day is not.
If the mind argues that there is no time for this, let the longer exhale answer.
Again: a shorter in-breath, a longer leaving. Like walking down a flight of stairs.
And let the nervous system follow, at its own pace.
Continue this downshift. You are not emptying the mind. You are slowing the body.
Where does hurry still live? Behind the eyes? In the hands?
Send the next long exhale there. Not to flatten it. To tell it the emergency can wait.
Calm is not a personality. It is permission to stop climbing for a few minutes.
If a wave of restlessness comes, ride it on the out-breath. It can move through.
If the mind wanders, return to the simple ratio: in, then longer out.
Nothing has to be solved for you to downshift.
Rest in the quieter tempo you have begun.
Let calm be allowed. Even now. Even here.
Stay with the longer leaving of the breath.
Now let your attention travel back. Feel the seat, the room, the slower pulse.
Take this downshift with you, as you slowly open your eyes.
